Translations

Translations

As I was writing the blog post Euler’s Identity - Redefining Revolution (Jan. 27, 2015) I kept being reminded of how closely the post paralleled my decades long repetitions of a need to understand translations as they relate to spiritual life.

Why is it I spend so much time talking about translations? About the need to understand and validate our need to create a new spiritual translation.

And about how it isn’t surprising that each of us discovers and creates a new translation to explain exactly the same experience?

There’s a concrete example out here in our ever evolving/devolving world. As any photographer or film maker will tell you light has a color temperature. Light from the sun contains all the colors of the electromagnetic spectrum. The color of Light reflected is dependent on the electromagnetic color it is reflecting and the position of receptor.

So anyhow, since all the color we see is from reflected light, the color, depending upon our perspective (position), is different but the light remains the same.

Our vision is different, but our experience is the same.

How unique is our position? And how does our be-ing affect our perspective?

This “Translations” post is a repetition. Been repeating it for more years than I can easily identify. If you’ve heard it before, move on by…

…OK. Still here.

Part of understanding a new spiritual translation that’s uniquely yours requires you to see who you really are, and to put your finite, though extraordinary, mind to the task of appropriately weighing and measuring your path. Weighing and measuring is - after all - the only thing the mind is qualified to do.

So…

Think first about what you’ve learned and understood about the universe. Think back as far as your mind can conceive. Think about how long this blink, blink moment, this ongoing moment, this aspect of the apparently eternal Rhythm has been marching forward (if you can for the moment - which is in and by itself ironic - accept the admittedly limited perspective inherent in seeing time marching in only one direction). Latest truth? 13.8 BILLION years. OK, don’t dwell on it. Accept it. 13.8 BILLION years.

Now, in your mind count off ten seconds. 1...2...3...etc.

Ok, fast forward… 13.8 BILLION years.

Don’t try to wrap your head around it. Just accept the awe.

Now.

Project.

While you have no laws to present that insure the accuracy of what you might project, given what you know about the universe, you really can make a reasonable projection as to how long this moment, rhythm, (maybe) reality is likely to continue. May not be able to give an outside maximum, or a minimum for that matter. But it would be a safe bet to project that there is no sign that the movement, moment, progression will not continue for at least as long into the future as it has been clicking away in the past. So lets give the universe another arbitrary 13.8 BILLION years.

So.
From the start to our arbitrary stop point, 27.6 BILLION years. The awe now becomes THE AWE. Accept it. Now really don’t try to wrap your mind around it. Just feel THE AWE.

And here you are. Each beat, beat, beat, moment extending backward/outward. Here you are.

And who are YOU?

I’ll tell you who you are.

In the past 13.8 billion years, never has there been another you. And there is nothing in the universe that suggests that in the next 13.8 billion years there will EVER be another you.

Who are you? 27.6 BILLION years - never before and never again. Who are you?

You are precious beyond understanding.

Some have countered, “That’s not being precious, that’s being insignificant beyond understanding“.

You know how I know that’s wrong?

I look to the love. I open to the love I feel for and from you, and I know.

You truly are precious beyond understanding.

While I know the preceding words are open to an almost infinite number of progressive discussions, and am willing to examine as many as are raised for as long as my mind and attention holds, for now I ask your indulgence.

If the old spiritual translations hold meaning for you, if you’ve truly fallen at the feet of your master, if you are fulfilled, I am thankful.

But if the old translations and the bureaucracies which control and project those translations do not speak to you, if the purported spiritual lessons from the past have left you with an agnosticism that accepts that you cannot know without attending to your need to experience, I ask you to open your mind and read further.

Another story I’ve told over and over -

Back a bit more than three decades ago, when I first began to work with dying folks, I had an experiential lesson about the nature of spiritual belief.

At the time I was a more or less active initiate of the Surat Shabd Yoga, a Sikh meditation group. As a member of a hospice team we could not project our own spiritual beliefs onto the patient and family with whom we were working. We accepted the beliefs and perspectives of the folks we were working with. Often patients and families never inquired as to the “religion” of hospice team members, assuming, I expect, that we were Christian, as were most of them.

Critical to this story is another fact about working with someone whose death is close. If you go into the experience open hearted and openhanded it's astounding how quickly you can become intimate with them. If they accept you into their dying, barriers and differences fade. Connection deep and profound happens. Not often, but it happens. Looking back now on those precious moments I realize that they have become an essential part of the spiritual foundation of my life. When I think there is no hope in speaking out, that there is no one left to hear, when I feel foolish Telling Telling Telling into the hurricane of noise out here, it’s their sharing that reminds me all I need do, is say it again.

On those rare and precious occasions when someone who had allowed me to connect, whose spiritual path had led them to a state of acceptance, invited me into their spiritual practice, into their prayer, I learned one of the great experiential lessons of my life.

If I opened myself to their prayer, and if I opened my heart to my own meditation practices, if I stepped just inside the dogma and the “practice”, I experienced with my dying friend a shared transcendent experience. The experience was exactly the same. Only the words and the practices were different. Only the translation differed.

So lets get back to you. You know. The unique one.

A Buddhist teacher once told me that if you open to the moment and are willing to take the next step on your path, the way will be shown to you. He said that the truth will whisper in your ear.

And it will have two primary characteristics -

1. It will be FREE. Truth and transcendence doesn’t want your stuff, doesn’t want to control you. It’s FREE.

2. It will sound familiar. That’s because you’ve heard it before. Only now, NOW, you can hear. All the repetitions were necessary so that you could hear now.

So our path, our translation - love centered and based in reality - becomes an unfolding.  A translation uniquely yours. As unique as you are.

Why should it surprise us that in order to relate and connect to our path the translation needs to reflect the uniqueness of our be-ing.

In this time, in concert with 7.2 billion of us, in the face overwhelming potential for both disaster and possibilities, does the timing seem, well…appropriate? You decide.

And if it is, and if we were to carry this forward (in our limited conception of which direction forward is) what would happen?

A Revolution.

Starting with your heart. A true, new re-volution beginning with your heart. It will change you. And it will change the world around you. A revolution from the inside out.

It will change the way you live.

Paradigm. A new paradigm.

And it will change the world.

With all our advances, for all the technological wonder, for all the billions of words spewed about equality, justice, and democracy, real change depends upon our ability to overcome greed.

And that was another experiential lesson I learned from those folks who, as they were dying and had come to acceptance through their uniquely individual spiritual translation, they had overcome greed.

We know what needs to be done. We know it’s time for world change. We know the reality of world community.

There are no problems that can’t ultimately be solved if the revolution begins with your heart.

With the recognition of your path.

The path is love - opening, examining, sharing - not owning -  the temporal, not denying the darkness but passing through together. In the balance, the middle way, we can experience the endless facets of transcendent love.

Your Translation…

love,

bill

P.S. If you’re new to the blog and might be understandably unclear how this all ties together, here is a list of earlier posts that, read in order, might give some clarity. In this age of say it all in under a minute, I know just reading the posts is an investment. I wish I could say it in less words, could be clearer. But this is what I got -

Euler's Identity & YOU - Redefine Revolution!

Euler’s Identity & YOU - Redefine Revolution!

e (i & pi) + 1 = 0

Euler’s Identity.

So What.

Well, it defines the deep connection between the endless numerical sequence of pi (3.14159...forever) defining a connected circle, and the endless truth of e (2.71828...), that accelerating, forever incomplete, trajectory of exponential growth.

So what.

Well, if you, excuse the expression, do the math, what you discover is that the never completed expansion of e, is deeply connected, and is actually a different perspective of pi. Seemingly opposite, reduced through Euler’s formula both e & pi tell the same story -  endless repetitions.

So what.

Well, there seems to be a similarity between the suggested endless repetitions uncovered by Euler’s Identity, the seemingly opposite realities of e & pi, and new physics telling us that a particle can exist in two places at once, and can be both a particle and a wave at the same time.

So what.

Well, it seems that it’s all a matter of perspective. And movement. Your perspective, as you read these words, defines your reality. And as these new discoveries open both our understanding of the universe and our moment in it, it also opens new pathways to transcendence. No longer tied to dogma and personas, this new freedom gives YOU control and responsibility for your path.

And from that perspective we can -

REDEFINE REVOLUTION

What is it about these reality boggling discoveries that has anything at all to do with transcendence? How can these seeming contradictions of logic be a gateway to, for most of us, a reconnection with spiritual life?

Any spiritual lesson, any teacher can only point the way. In the moment. And with the tick, tick, tick of times inevitable change, the next step needs to be defined, not by the lessons of the past, but the reality of the new moment.

It seems to me indisputable that the moment we’re in, all 7+ billion of us, has passed way, way, beyond organized spiritual bureaucracies’ capacity  to  offer relevant direction to a vast majority of us. And as science, technology, and increased personal control expand exponentially, our capacity to recognize, develop, and share our own path has become not just possible, but necessary.

Your path. As unique as you are. Defined by your be-ing, your moment, and the circumstances in which you find yourself.

This blog, the book Remembered Gifts and New Directions (Available free at www.sena.org ), and the upcoming book White Man Dancing - Grief, God, and a Unified Theory all detail the relevancy of each of us defining our unique personal path. (If you don’t want to search out the passages that relate to this, email me at weecoyote@aol.com and I‘ll send them to you.)

Is there a shared, unifying center for each of our paths? Yes and you know. Love. Sikh teacher Darshan Singh called it the Cry of the Heart. You hear the cry, your heart seeks it. Love.

In the heart of the love.

Your heart. Your love.

It’s where the Revolution begins. It’s where you will -

REDEFINE REVOLUTION

Because you already know. In the heart of your love there is - more. In the heart of your love is the transcendence for which your heart cries out. When love comes to us we are fulfilled because We Recognize It. It is the love we already have in our hearts. One love. It dispels the awful illusion of separateness.

First to hear. Then to look. Then to see, and experience. In our moment, in alliance with our conscious mind, attending to both the work to be done external and to the opening, unfolding nature of our paths’ transcendence.

That’s where the path begins. The love is the path.

In your heart. It’s a path inward that manifests itself outward. One of an infinite number of paradoxes.

What is the goal of this unique path that you are on?

To break free. To breach the barriers of duality, to overcome the limitations of your bi-hemispheric brain, to see the Rhythm that is everywhere and in all of time as a symptom not of freedom, but a pathway to letting go. To be free of all, ALL those endless repetitions.

To be free of all the re-volutions we must -

REDEFINE REVOLUTION

This following our unique path, this love sharing, this letting go, this redefinition of REVOLUTION is generated from your heart. It all begins in your heart. As you move through your moment and circumstance, your understanding and perspective of your moment will change.

You will see that science, for all its’ complexity and accomplishment is still only examining its’ belly button. You will see the futility of trying endlessly to look closer, and weigh more precisely - of defining and opening yet another re-volution. In spite of all the positive changes that weighing and measuring makes, and all the external benefits that result, the rewards are meaningless if they are not driven by, and incorporated into that unique, shared path that leads to transcendence. There is movement but no progress.

Only when that weighing and measuring is driven by our unique love directed, shared path can we -

REDEFINE REVOLUTION

You are the new Revolution.

In balance, in your moment, you will make the change. In yourself. A side, and lovely miracle is that as you change you will change the world. It’s perspective, and it’s progress.

We all know what needs to be done. There’s a beginning list in this blog, in White Man Dancing - Grief, God and a Unified Theory, and there’s one in your mind and heart too. But the first requirement is to -

REDEFINE REVOLUTION

You need not become a Revolutionary - you already are a Revolutionary. The Revolution is already in your heart. You don’t need to become.

You need only to remember.

It’s only a matter of perspective.

 I Love You...

Scott R.I.P.

Scott   R.I.P.

We shouldn't forget, with all this Quicksilver Times business, that this is, finally and always, about death.

And here Death is again.

Have called Death my familiar for couple of decades now, and it was for decades before I claimed it.

My boy Scott is dead.

He was a sorta son. Lived with us a few teenage years, my sister’s boy. Was broken, Scott was, but beautiful.

Two days before my three-quarter century birthday - last week, I watched him take his last breath.

Can’t pretend that I’m anything but fogged about it. All the old memories jumbled up together, the terrible process of the leave-taking, the morphine titration that depressed his respirations and set him free after almost two days instead of compassionate release so much earlier, the inability to find and hold close to the boy, and man, I loved in the Cheyne-Stokes breathing brokenbrokenbroken body we all sat with, has left me tired in a new way.

Not even sure what that means. But it reminds me and draws what focus I have to the passing. The almost unbearable passing. Light to darkness. Darkness to light.

At Scott’s memorial service I could find the light that Scott radiated. But only in its absence. And in the hundred faces I spoke to that night I felt a gathering together, a multifaceted dark star gathering in solitude seeking connection. And they did. We did. Even that dark connection was temporary.

After   the ritual, as we shared cookies and coffee, tea and famous Sheboygan dessert “bars”, the darkness was tempered, the connection sweet. But even as we shared I could feel them being drawn outward. The ritual done, the darkness validated, now lean back into the whispering solace of the waiting world. Slip back into the moment -so busy, so intriguing, so scary… Pass back.

Now a week has passed. And I struggle for balance. Easter is tomorrow. This Easter Saturday - which we hardly notice, sandwiched between Good Friday and Easter Sunday - attend with me the loss of beautiful Scott - of all this passing.

Is there new understanding of the passing? No, I don’t think so. But it is a repetition. And it needs proper attention, and as many moments as are needed to absorb and heal.

Always, and endless, the passing. And the love.

And in the revolution I call you to, the awakening of each heart births out of the courage to live through and examine the passing. To love through it. And to share it.

You are the revolution. You are tomorrow’s Dawn. You are the Easter. You are the risen.

I love you.

World Vote - Documentary

ATTENTION -  When you click on the link above it will take you to a page that says "Something Went Wrong." IGNORE THAT. Just click on "FOLLOW LINK". It will connect you to the video.

This link was sent to us by Riccardo Farabegoli Salamon, a friend in Portugal.

The film was created by Joel Marsden an Ameican activist who believes that creative democracy and fundamental change are possible on the planet.

Our work here at Quicksilver Times is based on identifying the social, economic, political, & spiritual systems that are broken beyond control, and to begin to create workable, equitable alternatives.

As we know, finding ways to begin, to start working towards planet wide change is almost overwhelmingly daunting.

Joel's film is one tiny, tiny step towards making the changes we all know need to be made. It is important as much for the hope it instills in us that, indeed, we  really can make this happen, as it is for the amazing accomplishment of getting such a diverse group of people from around the world to accept the need and possibility of a World Vote.

The film stimulates as many questions as it answers, maybe more, but that's a great value too.

As my dear Linda reminds me often - The way to eat an elephant (forgive me you veggie folks) with a spoon is one bite at a time.

I encourage you to take the hour plus time it takes to watch this film.

love,

bill
